Are You Planning To Go Away For a Long Time? Here’s How To Protect Your Plumbing

Whether you’re going away on a much-needed vacation or for an extended business trip, your home’s plumbing is the last thing you want to worry about. No one wants to come home to a house full of plumbing problems. Before going on your trip, take preventative measures to protect your plumbing and avoid disasters. What should you do?

Unclog Drains

Clogged drains can cause huge messes and expensive repairs. To prevent this, clear all your drains of any hair or debris. The exercise takes care of the sink, bathtub, and shower drains. You may need a plunger or a snake to get rid of tough clogs. Call a professional to clean all the drains, including the main sewer line. Inspect all to ensure they’re working well before leaving.

Turn Off the Water

Because you will be away for a prolonged period, it’s a good idea to turn off the main water supply to your home. It will prevent potential water damage, such as a burst pipe while you’re away. To turn off the water, locate your home’s main water valve and turn it to the “off” position. You may need a wrench to do this. Once it’s off, open all the taps to release water and pressure from the pipes. Additionally, flush all the toilets to empty the tanks.

Drain the Water Heater

If you have an electric water heater, it’s best to turn it off while you’re away. You don’t need to turn off a gas water heater,  but you should drain it to reduce the risk of corrosion. Attach a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and direct the water into a drainage pit, sink, or bathtub. Let the water run until it’s clear, then close the valve.

Check for Leaks

Before leaving, thoroughly check your home for any potential water leaks. Check under the sinks, around the toilets, and near all the faucets. If you have a basement, go down there and look for leaks or water damage.

Fix any leaks before you go. Because some leaks are not easy to detect, check for signs of water damage, such as water stains on the ceilings or walls. Mold can also be a sign of a water leak.

Protect Your Pipes from Freezing

If your trip is during the winter, take measures to protect your pipes from freezing. To do this, open all the cabinet doors in your kitchen and bathroom to allow heat to reach the pipes.

If you have exposed pipes, such as in the basement or attic, insulate them with foam pipe insulation. You can find this at most hardware stores. Set your thermostat to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit while away to ensure the heat stays.

Replace Old and Damaged Pipes

If your pipes are old or damaged, it’s a good idea to replace them before going on your trip. It prevents any plumbing problems while you’re away and saves you money in the long run. Let an expert handle this job to be sure it’s done correctly. They will also advise you on the best type of pipes to use.

Ask a Neighbor to Check In

It’s always a good idea to ask a trusted neighbor or family member to check on your home while you’re away. They can keep an eye on things and let you know if anything seems out of the ordinary.

They can also provide emergency assistance if there is a plumbing problem. However, taking care of your plumbing ensures it doesn’t develop problems. Simple measures to take include:

Never Flash Food Down the Drain

One of the leading causes of plumbing problems is grease and food buildup in the drains. To prevent this, never pour grease or food down the drain. Instead, dispose of it in the trash. Wipe off all plates and pans to remove as much food debris as possible before washing them.

Never Pour Coffee Grounds Down the Drain

Coffee grounds can easily clog your drains and cause plumbing problems. To avoid this, never pour coffee grounds down the drain. Instead, dispose of them in the trash.

Use a Strainer in Your Sinks

A strainer is a simple yet effective way to prevent clogged drains. Place them in the sinks to catch food particles, hair, and debris, keeping drains clear and preventing plumbing problems. Clean the strainers regularly and dispose of the debris in the trash.

Never Ignore Dripping Faucets

A dripping faucet might not seem like a big deal, but it wastes a lot of water and causes higher water bills. In addition, the constant dripping can damage your sink and faucet.

To avoid these problems, never ignore a dripping faucet. Fix it as soon as possible. The solutions could be as simple as replacing worn-out washers or tightening loose screws.

Never Use Chemicals to Unclog Drains

A common mistake people make is using harsh chemicals to unclog drains. It damages your pipes and makes the problem worse. Instead, use a plunger or a plumber’s snake to unclog drains. Better still, call professionals to handle the job.

Avoid Costly Repairs

By taking these preventative measures, you’ll protect your plumbing and avoid costly repairs. Always fix leaks and other plumbing issues quickly to prevent further damage. Have an expert regularly inspect your plumbing to ensure it’s in good working condition. You’ll have an easier time away when your plumbing is protected.
