5 Tricks to Make Your Tiny Room Look Bigger

It’s not yet the end of the world if your home has very limited space. If you currently live in a flat that doesn’t have that much area to work on, don’t worry, we got you.

Below are some tricks and trips to maximise your space and make it look bigger than it actually is!

1. Let more natural light come in

One of the easiest ways to make your room feel a little bit bigger is by simply opening up the room and letting the sunlight pass through.

Do this by ditching your heavy drapes and hanging lighter curtain materials instead. Light curtains will help you maximize the amount of sunlight that comes from outside

Natural light will not only brighten up the room, but it will also trick your eyes that the outside is an extension of the inside, creating a sense of bigger, cozier, and more open space.

If you’re one of the unlucky ones who live in small spaces where the sunlight is a luxury because of non-existent windows, don’t lose hope!

You can still brighten up your room with light fixtures, lamps, and other light sources. Artificial lighting, when done right, can also open up your space and make it look and feel warmer and bigger.

2. Clear the floor

If possible, take advantage of floating furniture like floating shelves, desks, consoles, and the like. These types of furniture are on the rise because of their smart and space-saving features.

These furniture pieces normally don’t have legs and are mounted on the wall, leaving the floor open for more storage.

You can use the floor space below as extra storage, or you can simply leave them clear and open to make the room feel more spacious.

Aside from pieces of furniture, you can also make use of floating lighting setups and hanging appliances. Instead of floor lamps, you can use sconces. Or instead of using stand fans, you can install ceiling fans to save space.

3. Opt for dual-purpose furniture

One of the main challenges of owning a small space is fitting all the essential furniture and appliances in a very limited area.

One way to solve this problem is by investing in pieces of furniture that also double as storage. Some of the best examples are side tables with extra drawers underneath for storage. You can also look for ottomans or stools with ample space inside to place other essentials.

Sofas the double as a bed or bed frames with drawers inside are also a great way to save space, at the same time organize all of your stuff if you don’t want to get rid of them at the moment.

4. Fill your room with mirrors

The use of mirrors is one of the oldest tricks in the playbook. It’s been around for decades for a reason and has been used many times both by designer furniture specialists and DIYers. And that’s simply because they work!

Mirrors reflect all the natural light from the outside and bounce them off to brighten the whole room.

Hanging a mirror can also help you bring the views from the outside to the inside by reflecting simply reflecting them. This subtly tricks your eyes that the space indoors is somehow extended outside even though it’s really not.

5. Don’t forget the rug

Rugs can make or break the look and feel of your space. When done right, the use of rugs can also make your room feel a little bit together.

As The Dude from the Big Lebowski movie likes to put it, “It really tied the room together!”

That’s why when shopping for accessories and textiles, put rugs on your list. Be sure to buy the right size. Be careful not to buy a big one that might crowd your floor or a very small one that could make your space look disproportionate.
